P R E S S R E L E A S E - 1 Frankfort, KY For Immediate Release CANOE KENTUCKY's President and CEO Ed Councill has announced the acquisition of a new location for the company's Kentucky Outdoor Center at the Forks of Elkhorn near the upper Elkhorn Creek Gorge. The 4,600 square foot former woolen mill is being renovated to accommodate the Center's paddlesport retail showroom, its hiking, biking, caving and fishing outfitting facilities, and its base of manufacturing for the only Kentucky commercially-built Bluegrass Canoe. "We are so excited to get a nice new home for this new area of our family's business," exclaimed Councill; "unless we split some of the functions, we would soon outgrow our Peaks Mill home," he added. The name of the new addition will be the 'Kentucky Outdoor Center.' "With 45 parking slots in Peaks Mill, we had to separate the retail/outfitting from rentals," Councill explained; "being a good neighbor means that we need to minimize traffic wherever we were located. That's why we needed another name different from Canoe Kentucky; so people would keep coming to our Peaks Mill location to rent boats. Those wanting to do something else would go to the new facility," he continued. A 'Name the Store Contest' was started in November. The contest was put on the internet to get the greatest number of suggestions possible. Although there were no winners technically, Tom Hillman, a Richmond, KY resident who works for a Lexington hotel and paddles both canoes and kayaks, came very close with "Kentucky's Outdoor Center." Therefore, in the interest of fairness, he was awarded a $250 gift certificate rather than the $500 one for winning outright. "Many people for nearly 20 years have paddled our canoes from CANOE KENTUCKY ," said Councill. "New activities which have been mentioned for the Center include bicycling, caving, fishing and climbing. We are even thinking of a 20-foot climbing wall inside the store," he stated. The store was formerly "The Furniture Refinishing Shop" owned and operated by Ben and Jeanne Hellerd of Frankfort. Previously, it was Markley's clock shop and upholstery, a saloon/bar, an apartment house, and originally a part of the Woolen Mill complex. It also is reputed to have a resident, a ghost. An open house is planned for the neighbors in February with a public grand opening in March. For more information call (800) K- CANOE-1, or e-mail at canoeky@aol.com. |
